Planetary Missions Program Office - Outreach Events

Some of the most valuable experiences I had during my NASA Internship were the opportunities I had to help plan and execute local and national outreach events. Facilitating engaging activities and talking to the public about the missions PMPO supports and their importance to scientific discovery was a great learning experience. It was also incredibly fun to watch kids and adults alike be inspired by and excited about space science.

  • Local events included: Huntsville Boy Scout Camp activities and presentations, NASA in the Park activities, and a planetarium show “Cocktails & Cosmos” in collaboration with The U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

  • National events include: NASA Symposium in Washington DC celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Discovery Program, Blerdcon in Washington DC where a virtual reality activity was presented to promote planetary science, and participating the NASA Science Exploration Forum student poster event.

Capturing your Favorite Moments

While I do not claim to be a professional photographer, I have learned how to capture candid and exciting moments at large events that can be used for promotion. I am also actively working on these skills as well as editing photos to improve their quality and remove any identifying information. Books for the Black Belt Event

The 17th annual Books for the Black Belt Campaign is a book drive that I was able to take charge of at UACED in 2023. If you are not familiar, Alabama's Black Belt includes some of the poorest counties in the United States. The primary goal of the University’s campaign is to provide one book for each child in the Black Belt counties -- more than 30,000 books! We hope that these books not only instill a love of reading, but a life-long love of learning in the children of this area.

Planning this event was no easy feat as it required a lot of communication and messaging for diverse audiences. Some of our audiences included donation partners, school administrators, journalists and the general public.
Due to the success we had advertising and organizing the event, over 11,000 books were collected and distributed to schools in the Black Belt region.
